Record HDTV Programs and Make HD Video Clips for YouTube

October 27th, 2009 No comments

Here is a very short guide:

  1. You need to purchase and install a TV/Video capture card on your computer. I use a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1600 capture card and am very happy with it. Here is the Amazon link to this card: Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1600 on Amazon.
  2. You need a DVR software to record TV programs. Do not use the software that comes with the TV capture card. It’s no good. I use SnapStream BeyondTV 4.9. I have tried many DVR softwares and, in my opinion, BeyondTV is the best. The BeyondTV website is: SnapStream BeyondTV.
  3. After recording the HDTV programs using BeyondTV, you can use your favorite video editing software to do whatever you want to the recorded clips.
  4. To prepare HD clips for Youtube, you need to resize and encode the clips. I use MeGUI to do this. When encoding the clips, I use H.264 as my video codec. I make sure the resolution of the clips is 1280×720. And I make sure I use a high bitrate for my clips. This might take some time (depending on the length of your video cilps).
  5. Upload clips to Youtube.
